Pilonidal cyst is a very common condition particularly in young people which can only be treated surgically. However, classical surgical techniques are characterized by long recovery time and painful daily changes making the surgery experience quite uncomfortable for the patients. In addition, the use of CO2 laser or radio frequencies is quite often reported which causes a major surgical trauma and practically does not differ from conventional surgical techniques.

Nowadays, with the use of a new generation laser, with a 360 degree radial and a radial laser probe at 1470 nm wavelength, it is possible to treat the pilonidal cyst completely, painlessly and with no incisions. In particular, the surgery is done with local anaesthesia and light conscious sedation. Through a small hole in the skin of the area the laser fibre penetrates the lesion and destroys it in depth without causing burn and thus minimizing postoperative pain. The duration of surgery is approximately 30 minutes and the patient is discharged after a few hours. The next day, they may return to their work.

The correct preoperative assessment and mapping of the lesion performed by a qualified General Surgeon at the Surgery Department of YODA D.C.U. is a prerequisite.
